SUBMITTED BY DELLIE ROSEN, Co-President
For this very special evening, hosted by The Philadelphia Social Club, members and guests were delighted and overwhelmed when they first entered the room. Soft Italian music played in the background. The many tables were covered with either red, green or white tablecloths, set up to expose the dance floor. Each centerpiece, a wine bottle draped in red and green tissue, displayed an Italian flag. And bringing the evening to life, was the incredibly talented singer and comedic impressionist, Michael Rapposelli.
The food, catered by Old Florida Catering surely smelled appetizing. Mouths were watering as tables were called to the front to partake of the delicious Caesar Salad, Italian Bread and Garlic Rolls, Ziti, Meatballs in a Marinara Sauce, Sausage with Peppers and Chicken Francaise. Ice buckets with large bottles of Coke already graced each table, and coffee, tea and bottled water were also available.
After the food tables eventually cleared, we had the pleasure of returning to the front. The buffet tables were now laden with ice cream (including sugar-free) and every conceivable concoction from which to assemble a scrumptious sundae.
Shortly after everyone enjoyed their dessert, door prize tickets (which were given to everyone when they checked in), were being scrutinized as Richie Cerota called out the numbers and Lewis Rachmell handed out the gifts to the lucky winners.
At 8:15, the party began. Mike Rapposelli immediately captivated the audience and instantly bonded with everyone. He reiterated for those who had not seen him before that he was half Jewish and a native South Philadelphian from 17th & Oregon Avenue. In a flash, his charismatic stage presence filled the room, as did his powerful voice.
Most spectacular were Mike’s exceptional impersonations of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett, Jerry Lewis, Al Pacino, John Travolta, Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Satchmo Armstrong, Sammy Davis, Jr., Billie Holiday and Jackie Mason, just to name a few.
When Mike sang, you never heard anything like it, especially his operatic rendition of Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" from the opera "Turandot", a Pavarotti favorite.
To change the pace ever so slightly, we then heard a very different version of “Funiculi, Funicula” a la Mike Rapposelli. The words, written by Mike and sung in English, conveyed to his mama that he got heartburn from eating her meatballs.
Mike performed with the sensitivity of a crooner and the power of an operatic tenor. The audience responded enthusiastically with a standing ovation, further proof of an outstanding performance by a superbly talented artist.
An hour later, Mike continued to MC and play music. Everyone was invited up to the dance floor to move their feet to “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown”, “Twist and Shout”, the “Electric Slide”, and a few slow dances in between. Most of all, the crowd enjoyed doing the Philadelphia Mummer’s Strut to the sounds of “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers”.
We would like to express our thanks to Harriet Gershman who took the reservations for this awesome affair. Our thanks and appreciation also goes out to Lewis Rachmell for securing the many lovely gifts that we were able to give away as prizes.
Most of all, our sincere thanks to Carol Weiss-Singer for her tremendous effort in coordinating, arranging, and making this entire event possible. Great job, Carol!!!! This was truly a night that will long be remembered.
