November 12 - Ben Kurland - very funny, stand-up comedian from Philadelphia. Chalk up another winning membership meeting for The Philadelphia Social Club! As the curtain opens, there are round tables dominating the room, enough to hold 300 members and guests quite comfortably.

Ben's lines were exceptionally funny and for 45 minutes, the room was filled with laughter! He sure did tickle a lot of funny bones and certainly lived up to his reputation, which has earned him the Best Philadelphia Monologist award from the Philadelphia Comedy Awards.

We were also honored to have with us two very well known Philadelphians who have graced our stage in the past and are now honorary members of the Club: Florence Seidelman, writer and producer of the movie, "Boynton Beach Club" (which has returned to the Boynton Cinema) and Marci Shatzman, Senior Editor of Community News at the Sun-sentinel. Marci writes a weekly column on Sundays about the adult communities west of Boynton Beach (soon to include Delray and surrounding areas).

We are proud to say that the November meeting was a pure delight!

October 8 -
One of our best meetings in Philly Club history. Florence Seidelman, writer and producer of the movie, "Boynton Beach Club", regaled our members with entertaining stories relating to the production of the movie. It goes without saying, we were all thrilled to meet the delightful and charming Florence Seidelman, as well as her husband Mike, and friend, Lois Rosenman. After Florence spoke, she graciously answered questions from the audience.

Florence was so thrilled to be among fellow Philadelphians, especially when she met people she knew from years gone by, that she is planning to attend several of our future social events. It was indeed an honor to be in the company of Florence Seidelman. We look forward to Florence and Mike becoming honorary members in The Philadelphia Social Club Hall of Fame.

September 17 - Charming Vocalist Robbie Carson, entertained us with her beautiful voice and a wide range of songs. She also shared some fun stories about her relationship as an Italian daughter-in-law to her Jewish mother-in-law.

August 13 - Manny Silver,
also known as "The Swinging Cantor", overwhelmed our members and guests this morning from his very first song, "Halleleuya". To further bond with his audience, we were told that Manny is the Cantorial Soloist at Temple Beth El in Hollywood. But what impressed us the most - MANNY COMES FROM PHILADELPHIA!!!!! He warmed our hearts with a selection of favorite Hebrew songs and ended with a familiar Frank Sinatra medley. Manny made us laugh by relating some funny remarks his pre-schoolers at Temple Beth El had said to him, making it a truly delightful morning!

July 9 - It was unanimously voted and approved to change the bylaws to allow two people to co-chair the presidency. President Carol Weiss announced that Dellie Rosen will now be a Co-President with her.

An exciting new announcement was made which applies to Meeting Sponsors. Those members who have sponsored meetings in the past - from June 2005 on - and those members who plan to sponsor future meetings, will automatically be entered in the MEETING SPONSOR "LOTTERY". The drawing will take place at our December 3rd meeting and the winner(s) will receive a free membership to The Philadelphia Social Club.

ENTERTAINMENT - We were privileged, once again, to have Gwen Johnson take over the stage, belting out songs a la Pearl Bailey. Gwen definitely has her own unique, uplifting ballad style, colorfully peppered with crooning, jazz, and rhythm and blues. A highlight of her performance was when she invited our own Philly Club member and professional singer, Jerry Merman, to sing with her - a delightful rendition of "It's All Right With Me". Of course Gwen received a standing ovation - and very well deserved. With such a beautiful, powerful voice, she could really give any of the American Idols a run for their money.

June 11, 2006 - Once again, we were privileged to be entertained by Marty Kaye, the ultimate performer, who has worked with such greats as Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Little Anthony and the Imperials, Frankie Vallie and the 4 Seasons, Martha and the Vandellas, and Mitch Rider.

Everyone sang along with "By Mir Bist Du Shane", loved his special effects instrument, and were dancing in their seats to "If I were a Rich Man" from Fiddler. Marty's closing number, "Bring him Home" from Les Miz brought him a standing ovation.

Our 50/50 is now held at the end of the meeting. In addition to getting "half the pot", the winner and one other were given Philly Club T-shirts. There was lots of screamin' goin' on as these happy members ran to the front to claim their prizes!!!

May 14 - Cecilia Roy, a very unusual performer - Piano Entertainer, Classic Jazz, Pop and more. It was a wonderful meeting. Cecilia brought the music alive through her playing and vocal stylings. She brings exuberance, warmth and love to what she plays and sings and joy to her audiences, as evidenced by those who sang along with her and those who were dancing in the aisles.

A most welcome addition was her husband George who sang in several different languages. George is mainly a doctor and a very good one Cecilia assured us. At the end of their performance, they received a standing ovation. Originally from British Columbia, Cecilia currently makes her home in South Florida.

April 9 - ENTERTAINER Timothy Hawkins, a comic, vocalist, magician, and does improvisational humor.

As Dellie Rosen wrote, "This meeting was certainly one of our best! Everyone left the room smiling and commenting on this exceptional meeting; our members totally in awe of the spectacular entertainer, Timothy Hawkins. Tim was billed as a comic, vocalist, magician, and improvisational humorist and he excelled at all. He has performed in front of thousands of audiences across the U.S. and continues to be in constant demand. It is no surprise why. Tim was truly excellent and certainly enjoyed by all!"

March 12 - Installation of Officers, presided over by the Dean of Philadelphia Broadcasting and nine-time Emmy Award winner, Al Meltzer.

325 members of our Philadelphia Social Club met for the special Opening Meeting & Breakfast - the first of the new season. After a few announcements, Mr. Meltzer installed the officers, then spoke at length and amused everyone with his many sports-related antecdotes. He followed this with a very informative question and answer period. This portion of our meeting sped by and everyone seemed quite reluctant to leave.

Feb. 5 -The multi-talented JERRY MERMAN entertained on keyboard with his incredible singing and the delightful ventriloquist antics of his whimsical puppets as they burst into song.

Jan. 8, 2006 - General Meeting was replaced by 2nd ANNUAL LUNCHEON with the BROWARD COUNTY MUMMER'S STRING BAND at the South Palm Beach Counter Civic Center.

Philadelphia LOVES the Mummers and The Philadelphia Social Club is no exception, as evidenced at this event. After a yummy lunch, our members had a fun time socializing; even more so when Carol Weiss grabbed the mike and did an impromptu "Meet your old high school buds" scene.

At 1:30 p.m., to everyone's delight, the Broward County Mummers String Band made their appearance! There was a mad scramble for those little frilly umbrellas as we mobbed the dance floor and "mummed" for the next two hours! It was a wonderful afternoon and left us all looking forward to our next event when the Philadelphia Social Club will meet again.
