2006 EVENTS
Murder on the Beach - On Wednesday, November 1st, 37 members of our Club met at the Dolce Amore Café in Pineapple Grove, Delray Beach. Following a delicious lunch, we settled in at the "Murder on the Beach" Book Store, to hear mystery author Jilliane Hoffman speak.
Jilliane was a charming, delightful, and charismatic speaker, but mostly it was her humor and delivery that had us laughing non-stop. Jilliane did not just give a book review, nor did she tell much of the plot. She related events about her life that led up to her writing the book - events that were totally hysterical, but told in such a way that she captivated the audience with all her funny shtik. Jilliane was especially excited about the fact that they will be making a movie of her book, "Retribution."
When her talk ended, Jilliane graciously signed copies of her book, which were given to us gratis. I heard several people remark that they were going to stop reading their present book in order to dive right into hers - that's how anxious they were to read "Retribution."
When The Philadelphia Social Club plans an event, we try to do everything we can to make it a smashing success. Today's event went beyond all our expectations, thanks to mystery author, Jilliane Hoffman. We extend our thanks and appreciation to Anita Baker who arranged and chaired this wonderful afternoon!
Bus Trip to SEMINOLE HARD ROCK HOTEL & CASINO in Hollywood, Sunday, August 20, 2006. At 9 a.m. fifteen Philadelphia Social Club members boarded a mini bus to seek their fortunes at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino. We had a delightful time socializing on the bus.
Upon our arrival at the resort, we were greeted by a casino representative who gave us our package of bonuses. We were then on our way to a wonderful afternoon of gambling and exploring the beautiful shops, restaurants and the Seminole Museum. Due to our losses, the bus rode a little bit higher on the way home, but a good time was had by all.
JUNGLE QUEEN RIVERBOAT
On Saturday evening, June 3rd, 60 members of the Philadelphia Social Club cruised on the Jungle Queen Riverboat in Fort Lauderdale. It was most enjoyable to leisurely sail along the New River and admire the estate homes and yachts of the rich and famous.
When we arrived at the private island, we were served delicious ribs, chicken and shrimp, along with all the trimmings and dessert. Food was plentiful. To add to our entertainment, a variety show followed, after which we returned to the Jungle Queen. Sailing back, the boat appeared to be lower in the water and our pants just a little bit tighter.
At the conclusion of this delightful evening, our Philly Club sailors disembarked and headed back to their home ports in Delray, Boynton and all points North. It was smooth sailing, thanks to Barbara Trachtman, who arranged this fantastic trip and handled all the details.
NIGHTTIME HARNESS RACING - Saturday, April 22nd. 60 members of the Philadelphia Social Club met at Pompano Park to experience the live excitement of nighttime harness racing. There was lots of socializing at the Clubhouse on the 4th floor; more like a private party of the PSC. Surprisingly, the buffet dinner was excellent and enjoyed by all - right down to the lavish display of desserts.
Needless to say, there was lots of excitement as bets were placed and horses were cheered on to the finish line. The second race was named for The Philadelphia Social Club and we were warmly welcomed. At the end of the race, a photo was taken of six of our members in back of the winning horse.
It was a really fun night out, with most of us winning enough to splurge at Ben & Jerry's as we left the park.
FASHION FOLLIES LUNCHEON & FASHION SHOW - March 29, 2006
The Philadelphia Social Club is scoring more high marks after this latest event, professionally executed and organized by Vice President, Barbara Trachtman.
Upon entering the elegant Benvenuto's Restaurant, our members and guests were greeted with Mimosa's. A smashing big hit were the vendors who sold very beautiful and most unusual jewelry, handbags and clothing.
Following a sumptuous luncheon, right down to the coffee ice cream surrounded by a yummy chocolate bomb (fruit for the calorie conscious), the show opened with Ethel Gibson, from the Ziegfeld Girls of Florida, performing "Hello Dolly" a la Carol Channing.
Elegant and gorgeous fashions were represented by Lisa Todd, Zambony Designs, Sondro, Glitters, Mona Lisa and Plaza Boutique.
Joel Odierno on keyboard sang throughout the afternoon and delighted us all with his excellent renditions.
At the close of this incredible afternoon, Barbara was swamped with accolades. Not one person missed telling her what a wonderful time they had and how elegant an affair it was. Many expressed a desire for more get-togethers during the summer months and this is being looked into.
King Tut Exhibit - Wednesday,
March 8, 2006 Museum
of Art | Fort Lauderdale
Two busloads of people enjoyed the dazzling treasures of the King Tut exhibit in Fort Lauderdale. The exhibit was amazing and well worth the trip. Lunch at Max's Grille in Las Olas was both tasty and reasonable. The second group got free audios when the bus broke down and arrived late.
Special thanks to Mark Kositsky for his help.
2nd Annual Barbeque - Sunday morning, January 15th -
Under clear skies with frigid temps, members of our Philly Club took over the two pavilions at the South Palm Beach County Civic Center for our 2nd annual Barbeque Picnic. There was lots of socialization under the sun until it was time to que up for a yummy selection of burgers, hot dogs, BBQ'd ribs and chicken. Even though our members did it justice, there was food left over to be taken to a shelter.
Carol Weiss broke up the afternoon with a quiz she had prepared, and everyone had fun figuring out the answers. Brian & Phyllis Bootel and guest were the winners who received our Philly Club designer T-shirts. With the weather warming up, an excellent time was had by all!
