A Message from
CAROL WEISS-SINGER, Founder
The Philadelphia Social Club

In February 2003, I moved to Bellaggio, a 55+ community in Lake Worth. Newly single, there was a need to establish new friends and roots in my life. I quickly found that most residents were from the north, but not from Philadelphia. There were only nine couples living in Bellaggio who were from Philly, and so I decided to form a Philadelphia club that would draw from the surrounding areas.

Marci Shatzman, a columnist for the Sun-Sentinel, who incidentally is also a Philadelphian, interviewed me and wrote a wonderful column in the Community section of the Sunday paper. She described what I was trying to accomplish and included my contact information.

That morning I received many phone calls, but the one that stands out most came from Dellie Rosen. After a pleasant conversation, we decided to meet for lunch at TooJays in the Wellington Mall. It was soul sisters at first sight! We were very much alike in that we were both workaholics and perfectionists. From day one, we got along famously. (Not only have we been close friends ever since, but we share the position of Co-Presidents of The Philadelphia Social Club.)

As a result of Marci's article, about 160 Philadelphians responded. On December 14, 2003, I arranged a brunch for 110 Philadelphians who shared my desire to get together with other Philadelphians. I was thrilled to watch and listen to all that I was missing (getting together with my own kind.)

At the brunch, I asked for volunteers who had an interest in formalizing the club. There were 40 people who signed up. In January, 2004, 32 of us met and formed a Board. The first Board meeting was held at my home in February, and the first general meeting of the new Philadelphia Social Club took place shortly thereafter.

By November, 2004, The Philadelphia Social Club grew to a whopping 303 members with a wait list of 73 more, all chomping at the bit to join.

The Philadelphia Social Club has certainly come a long way since its inception. Our reputation spread like quick fire and we have members as far south as Aventura and as far north as Port St. Lucie. We finally had to limit membership to 400 people and for the past several years, have held our monthly meetings at the South Palm Beach County Civic Center.

I wish to convey my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to all my fellow Philadelphians who have helped make my dream come true.
